Integrated storage

Integrating storage with PV is one route to making solar energy “dispatchable” and “non-intermittent.” Converting electricity into chemical energy — e.g., splitting a stable compound to create more volatile ones — is one route to achieve energy storage with potentially high energy density.

Innovations: Collaborating with the Nocera group at Harvard, we demonstrated that it is possible to use silicon PV to drive water splitting in a pH-neutral environment[1], with a theoretical efficiency limit approaching fifteen percent[2].
